Pusu Patas Kari Truku

Pusu Patas Kari Truku (Truku dictionary) is an online dictionary of the Truku (Taroko) language, an Indigenous language of Taiwan. Work on it began in 2008. It is organized around roots: it collects the words derived from each root, common phrases and example sentences, offers Truku–Chinese search in both directions, and has recordings for some entries.

The dictionary is built on the dictionaries published over many years by the Xiulin Township Office, and on the work of many Truku community members and volunteers who entered and proofread it entry by entry. The website has now been improved with the help of AI technology, and we will keep adding more services in the future.

How to use

  • Search: type a Truku or Chinese word at the top of the page. A “partial match” search finds every entry that contains your keyword; an “exact match” search finds only identical entries. English keywords currently find roots and phrases that have an English translation.
  • Roots: most Truku words are formed by adding affixes to a root. A root’s page lists all of its derived words and example sentences.
  • Pronunciation: press the 🔊 play button to hear the pronunciation.
  • Word-of-the-day widget: can be embedded in school or community websites; see below for how to use it.

About the English version

This dictionary was compiled in Truku and Chinese. The English version translates the interface and is adding English translations step by step:

  • Roots, phrases and encyclopedia categories have English translations produced with AI assistance. They were translated from the Chinese definitions and have not all been reviewed by Truku-speaking editors yet; entries that are still unreviewed are marked “AI-assisted translation”.
  • Words and example sentences are shown with their Chinese definitions for now.

The Truku text is always the original. If you notice a translation error, please contact the site maintainer (lahang@truku.tw).
